OAKLAND — The Oakland school district is investigating claims by a local real estate developer that its school board president, David Kakishiba, used his position in the school system to further the agenda of the nonprofit organization he directs. The complaints accuse Kakishiba of forcing staff at three Fruitvale-area elementary schools to distribute fliers about a high-density condominium project proposed for the neighborhood. -more-

Oak-to-Ninth opponents drop suit against Oakland

OAKLAND _ The group that hoped to overturn the city's Oak-to-Ninth project with a ballot measure agreed Friday to drop its lawsuit challenging City Attorney John Russo's decision to halt signature counting, Russo said.
Russo invalidated the signatures last year after determining that project opponents used the wrong version of the Oak-to-Ninth ordinance when circulating a petition against the project.
